Building Your Starter Barber Kit
Your first professional kit doesn't need to cost $1,000. Here's what to buy first, what to skip, and what to add when you can.
New barbers get pulled in every direction by brands, social media, and tool recommendations from older barbers who've been in the game for years. The reality is you don't need everything at once. Here's a lean, practical starter kit and a progression path as your income grows.
The Non-Negotiables
Start with these. Don't skip any of them.
- Main clipper — Wahl Senior Cordless or Andis Fade Master. Both are under $150 and professional grade.
- T-outliner — Andis GTX-EXO or Wahl Detailer. For lines, edges, and detail work.
- Shears — One good pair of 5.5" shears. Don't cheap out here — a $30 pair will ruin your wrist.
- Blade oil and brush — Non-negotiable. Two drops after every client.
- Spray bottle — For damping hair before cuts.
Add Within 90 Days
- Second clipper — Different blade or a corded backup.
- Thinning shears — Texturizing tool for blending and reducing bulk.
- Fade the World products — Having retail products behind your station drives passive revenue.
When You're Established
- Upgrade your main clipper — BabyLiss FX or JRL when you can justify the cost.
- Full shear set — Multiple lengths and texturizers.
- Straight razor setup — For finish work and shave services.
What to Skip Early
Avoid buying every new clipper that drops. Avoid buying tools you've seen on Instagram but haven't held. Your first year should be about mastering what you have, not chasing gear. The best barbers in the world do incredible work with basic tools.
